Cecilia Perez
Born in Guatemala, 1991. Paints ever since she remembers and started to attend art lessons at the age of 10. For college, studied Educational Psychology in Universidad del Istmo, Guatemala and later on a Masters in Human Development with a concentration in Arts and Media at Tufts University in the United States. As part of the program studied courses such as Ceramics, Drawing for animation, and Innovative methods for art education. Currently paints and teaches art to people from all ages. Her goal is to contribute to the culture of this century with her work and to accompany other artists, her students, while they create their own contribution. She enjoys reading a good book, eating chocolate, playing basketball and contemplating the stars.
She has participated in several art shows with other artists, mostly with independent curators and have had individual exhibitions, last year in February, this year in March, with at least 20 pieces of work as a result of her study around a topic that is crucial to her, for example this year’s topic was on forgiveness. She was able to meditate and express her own definition of forgiveness, how it is seen through human history and ended up full of hope of how forgiveness overcomes evil with good. Last year she was selected as guest artist for Arte Junkabal where she was able to explore the cinema world and had to present work for “Fantasy movies”, she ended up with 5 pieces showing the main characteristics of fantasy cinema. Now she is working on her next year’s exhibition.

See all Cecilia Perez artI am tired of life trying to break things down into black and white, and watching the most daring talking about the shades of grey. In my work I am interested in breaking that mind set and using as much color as possible. Life is full of color, some intense, some more neutral but all is color. Painting is my channel to express my ideas and explore the world. Provoked by my emotions I am an abstract expressionist who combines acrylic with oil pastels, pastels, watercolor and gouache to make visible everything I have inside. My paintings are a result of many layers of many months of work and they develop according to the circumstances happening in my own life and the analysis of ideas I read or hear on a podcast. I like to play with light and use free lines to add up to the textures and composition. Each painting is a place where I am able to have fun and learn. It's almost a contradiction because it feels like both: a challenge and a liberation.
