Rocio Villanueva
Rocio Villanueva is an Italian-Guatemalan photographer and artist, residing in Guatemala City. From a very young age, artistic expressions have been etched in her consciousness through drawing, painting, photography, and art appreciation, with the help of her great-uncle, who casually introduced her to this world. Rocio is self-taught, and for the past seven years, she has created conceptual surrealist works. She primarily uses digital photography as her canvas, and Photoshop as the tool for her creations. Her creative process begins beyond the computer. It starts with sketches on paper that take shape through elements, time, places, and characters. Her images represent parallel and dreamlike worlds that come to life through the interplay of light and shadow, color, and textures, creating a vision that resembles a painting more than a photograph. She has participated in group exhibitions in Guatemala City, Barcelona, Vienna, New York, Rome, Miami, and Palm Beach, and has had solo exhibitions in Guatemala City.

I weave individual narratives within a fantastical world, inviting the viewer to interpret their own stories in a nostalgic and imaginary space. Each character I create exists in a state of transition and contemplation, disconnected from reality, where the inner world prevails amid the chaos of the present world. I wish to reveal the invisible, the intimate, to fill voids and materialize dreams without beginning or end. I want to present the unconscious within the world of dreams, outside the cold and harsh reality that surrounds it, through digitally manipulated photography. My artistic production is not about pleasing the outside world. It is merely a mirror of my interior; a place where I hide and contemplate a better version of reality. It is where the ghosts of time have already lived, and the secrets of the future merge in a sacred and timeless moment. My work reflects on the delicate nature of beauty, the pain of loss, and the vulnerability of the human spirit. I offer these reflections to initiate a deep dialogue with those who experience my art, aiming to establish a revealing and healing connection. I want the observer to discover themselves within the image. I strive to create images that represent psychological experiences arising spontaneously and unconsciously, without tangible or scientific knowledge. They are born in my mind with the innocence with which I approach a subject that unsettles me, flowing without a pre-established guide. Often, I take random paths to arrive at the theme of the artwork, which transforms throughout its development. I complement my work with lyrical texts that convey my feelings, emotions, and thoughts, carefully choosing words to form a whole with the visual piece."
